Internships offer you a chance to draw from your academic studies and to gain experiential learning guided by professional and academic development advisers in Africa. Be challenged and supported as an extended member of the African Impact team.
Academic internships with African Impact offer students an opportunity to tailor a progressively challenging work experience, with the support of an organization that provides hands-on orientation, training, supervision, reflection and feedback.
Academic internships are valuable in that they allow the student to explore the interplay between the theoretical and what is being experienced – the key to experiential education. The nature of the work is both substantial and relevant to the goals of the communities and projects, allowing students to see the value of their contributions and to appreciate how it fits in the context of the field.
The value of an academic internship is further enhanced through the provision of structured opportunities for reflection, encouraging students to deeply examine their own work and learn from the perspective and values of others.
Individually-designed academic internships provide the focused student with an opportunity to apply developing research, writing, and analytical skills towards real world challenges under conditions not possible in the classroom.
We advise that students engage a lecturer or supervisor prior to undertaking an academic internship, to assist them in matching a program to their academic needs and predetermining possible credit. Without a strong foundation in theoretical study, the relevance of the internship experience stands to diminish, and ensuring that learning outcomes are aligned beforehand is key.
