Gender Equality Academic Internship, Zambia
Discover the popular tourist town of Livingstone when you travel to Zambia for this inspiring gender equality initiative. In your role as an intern you will facilitate workshops around the six identified ‘pillars’ of women’s development, undertake business development and awareness duties alongside the Business Manager, implement monitoring and evaluation strategies and develop materials for internal and external use. Each of your responsibilities is dual in its outcome, and you can expect to develop your capacity for research, monitoring and evaluation, communication and business development, and contribute to the development of best practices in context and the successful transition of girls into confident, well-educated leaders in their community.
This project is being implemented regionally, with over 220 girls directly impacted with the involvement of the greater community in South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia respectively.

Few places in Africa offer what Livingstone so effortlessly achieves. The popular tourist town is well-established with a host of restaurants and amenities, and surrounded by rich wildlife areas that offer incredible opportunities for both driving and walking safaris, where visitors will be treated to seeing rhino, giraffe scores of elephant and more. Bordering a vast stretch of the Zambezi, Livingstone is also the ideal location to enjoy relaxed boat cruises along the picturesque waterways.
Tasks for your internship can be customized around your skills and professional development goals; insofar as they coordinate with the current needs of the community. You will be based at our project office and your tasks and expectations such as weekly journal entries will be monitored and guided by the Business Manager on site, as well as the Internship Supervisor. The following duties are mandatory, and form the base of internships at each operating location. Each will involve a comprehensive induction, workshop on expectations and goal-setting for personal development.
Throughout the course of your internship, you will:
- Gain an in-depth understanding of gender-based challenges in a Zambian context
- Develop valuable professional skills in the realm of international development and NPO management
- Build a strong research rapport
- Be exposed to intercultural learning
In the implementation of your *research tasks, you will utilize Social Research Methodologies and compile your outcomes into a report. Implementing and reporting on monitoring and evaluation strategies, as well as evaluating their efficiency is a key task on your internship. You will also be implementing various business development tasks including fundraising activities, marketing and communication and developing various materials for both internal and external use. The facilitation of workshops covering the six identified pillars of women’s development forms a significant component of your internship, as does appropriately reporting on outcomes.
Throughout the course of your internship, you will complete 180 hours of service and develop valuable experiential learning skills such as reflection, intercultural engagement, journal writing as a research aid, and presenting learnings. Weekly progress meetings with your adviser will ensure that you are meeting your personal and professional goals.

In working with The Girl Impact project you are making your contribution to the 6 pillars of the project to further the campaign of transitioning the girls successfully to womanhood. Your social media plan, data and narratives collected, reports will all be considered of the goal towards gender equality in contexts where access and expression may be limited. This is also a personal project on furthering ones personal goals and understanding towards a successful girl empowerment project. This realization is done in a supported and guided way through the African Impact tea, on the ground, the head office as well as in isolation for your personal development.
In Zambia, over 60% of the population live below the poverty line. As a result, education is not prioritized, particularly not for girls. Teenage pregnancy, menstruation, duties around the home or having to care for younger siblings are the main causes of girls dropping out of school; predominantly by the age of 13.
With little support available to these girls, they face a future of very limited potential. HIV spreads twice as fast among uneducated girls in Zambia than any country in the world. One in ten Zambian women are married before the age of 15, and almost 30% of young women aged 15 to 19 have children of their own.
Through the six identified pillars, this program initiates sustainable solutions to gender-based inequalities. Research has shown that women and girls over the age of 16 who earn an income, reinvest up to 90% of it back into their families and communities, versus men, who only reinvest up to 40%. Furthermore, girls who have a basic education are three times less likely to contract HIV. Every additional year of primary school education boosts girls’ income potential by 10 – 20%, and just one year of secondary school can double this.
Through your internship, you will contribute to the realization of these girls’ potential. The workshops you facilitate will deliver key information, which provides girls with the agency to make informed decisions on subjects including schooling and their bodies. Your monitoring and evaluation duties will allow us to scrutinize our impact against our interventions, and ensure that our strategies remain informed and relevant.
- WEEK 1
Your first week will be dedicated to your orientation and induction. You will gain an in-depth understanding of the structure of your internship, including your tasks, setting goals, scheduling, community development, cultural integration, reflection, research and expectations – both personal and professional.
- WEEK 2:
Your second week will focus on developing your contextual knowledge. You will be able to confidently begin implementing your tasks, which in conjunction with individual meetings with your supervisor, will allow you to develop your concept note.
- WEEK 3:
In your third week, you will develop an understanding of the six “pillars”, starting with education. Over the course of the following weeks, you can expect to develop an in-depth understanding of each in context.
You will also have your first meeting with your personal professional development coach, who will guide you through aligning your tasks to your professional goals.
- WEEK 4:
In week four, you will develop your concept note into a research proposal for your final report. Your supervisor will assist you with the design and development thereof.
You will have the opportunity to reflect on your progress at the half-way mark of your internship through your journal entries, and discuss it with your supervisor, identifying any challenges and creating possible solutions.
- WEEK 5:
Your proposal will be submitted in week five. At this point, you will have the opportunity to critically analyze your cultural integration and reflect on it’s influence.
- WEEK 6:
In week six, your proposal will undergo both peer review and review by your supervisor. You will have the opportunity to discuss your progress to date, both personally and professionally with your professional development coach.
- WEEK 7:
Week seven will be focused on preparing your observations, conducting further empirical research and planning the consolidation of your report.
- WEEK 8:
In your final week, you will embark on your final reflections, presenting your findings and preparing a handover document to ensure that your contribution to the project continues.
You will have the opportunity to discuss what you’ve gained personally from the internship and your cultural immersion.

Internship range from 3-24 weeks
From $1000 depending on the duration and time of year. Your Internship fee covers all your food, accommodation, Academic support as well as project and living support.
You will be accommodated in a private African Impact house within the popular and comfortable Livingstone Backpackers. The house has access to a large swimming pool, hot tub, bar area many lounges and area to relax! Your house is a 4 minute walk away from the town centre, where you can find stores, markets, shops and banks as well as a good selection of bars and restaurants.
Logistics included and provided by African Impact are:
- Participants will be collected from the airport upon arrival and transferred to base
- Accommodation is based in a privet areas of a nice backpackers, with simple, but comfortable shared rooms with communal ablutions
- All meals for the duration of the project, with the exception of free days will be provided
- Any transport required for program activities will be provided
- Participants will be transferred back to the airport for their departure
- You will have access to African Impact 24 hour support team meeting and working with them on a daily basis.
