The lush tropical islands of Zanzibar are nestled just off the coast of East Africa. Our Zanzibar study abroad base is in the small coastal town of Jambiani. We run marine research and community programs on the island and with over a decade running Zanzibar study abroad opportunities, African Impact provide the very best in Zanzibar study abroad opportunities.
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania, after the two nations (and nation names) merged in April 1964. Zanzibar has its own government consisting of the Revolutionary Council and House of Representative and its own president. As Zanzibar is in union with Tanzania, Tanzania still makes decisions for both countries in specified and regulated instances, but so too the government in Zanzibar has the autonomy to make decisions pertaining to its archipelago.
Zanzibar consists of many small islands, and therefore referred to as an archipelago, and prides itself on its historic centre also being a World Heritage Site, Stone Town. Collectively the islands are also known as the ‘Spice Islands’ as the main industries are spices, raffia and tourism. Zanzibar houses the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey, the Zanzibar servaline genet and use to also house the Zanzibar leopard before extinction. The archipelago has a population of 1.3 million people, with an annual estimated growth rate of 3.1 percent. The population of Zanzibar is almost entirely of Islamic faith, at an estimated 98.9 percent.
Zanzibar recently developed Vision 2020, an education development plan to ensure access to quality education for everyone- including women, children, persons with disabilities and the like-, eradicate illiteracy, upgrading teachers’ competence and also encourage NGOs and the private sector investments in the provision of education and education facilities. We work in Jambiani and with The Happy Africa Foundation, built a learning center where students will now get to measure the impact of the center on the local residents and beneficiaries, against this Vision 2020. This is the start of a success story where African Impact, The Happy Africa Foundation and the local government in Zanzibar work together to offer quality education to all the people residing on the archipelago. Our Zanzibar study abroad programs are custom made for your groups to make sure you get the highest quality experience possible.
